During August and September 2026, I travelled through part of Canada, from Toronto and Niagara Falls to Vancouver, Whistler, Banff and Jasper. More than a journey from one place to another, it was a route conceived through photography: observing how the scale of the landscape changes, how light responds in each place and what kind of image appears when one stops looking only for the obvious.

Niagara was one of the first visual shocks. Not only because of the force of the water, but also because of the difficulty of translating that magnitude into a photograph. There, the camera forces a decision: either record the spectacle or try to enter the atmosphere created by the mist, the noise and the sensation of standing before something that cannot be fully encompassed.

In the west came the damp forests of British Columbia, the lakes and the mountains. Whistler opened the journey towards a kind of photography more attentive to depth, to the layers of the landscape and to that unstable light that shifts among trees, clouds and clearings. Later, in the Rockies, places such as Lake Louise, Moraine Lake and the route to Jasper confirmed something that always interests me: a landscape photographed countless times still demands a personal way of seeing.

One of the most intense stretches was the Icefields Parkway. Bow Lake, Peyto Lake, Waterfowl and the Columbia Icefield appeared as very different scenes, though connected by the presence of ice, water and mountains. Near Jasper, the traces of the great 2024 wildfire introduced another layer to the journey: that of the wounded landscape, where photography stops recording beauty alone and also begins to look at transformation, loss and time.

Wildlife appeared sporadically and without warning: deer, squirrels, birds, an American pika, herons, eagles and finally a large elk near Maligne Lake. That, too, was part of the journey: accepting that the best image is often not the one we plan, but the one that appears when our gaze is available.

Canada left me with many photographs, but above all with an experience of observation. In an immense territory, photography became a way to pause, to order what I had seen and to understand that not every landscape reveals itself immediately. Some show themselves quickly. Others ask for time.
